The 2-Minute Rule for Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedic, multilingual, free content and Encyclopedia. It is maintained and edited by volunteers through a model that relies on collaboration in a closed manner. It is edited using wiki-style editing. Wikipedia was established in January 1996 as a global, free content encyclopedia. It is currently being edited and reviewed by unpaid editors. Wikipedia is today one of the most well-known sources of information on the internet. Wikipedia has slowly grown to become one of the top-ranked search results for virtually every key term in English. Wikipedia was also named one of the Top Internet Websites for the third time in its history.

Wikipedia was founded by and is run by the nonprofit organization, the United States National Academy of Sciences with the assistance of the United States National Science Foundation. The site was launched after the first version of Wikipedia was created by Wales. Wales was later the founder of Wikipedia and is currently its chief executive officer. Wikipedia is considered a neutral reference point that is free from commercial pressure or editorial interest. Wikipedia contributors all contribute their own knowledge and professional expertise in various areas that span multiple disciplines and philosophies across the world.

Wikipedia was designed to allow people all over the world could share their knowledge and experience on specific subjects. Wikipedia can assist you in finding articles about a topic you are interested in, such as when an engineering student is looking for information about the subject. A lawyer or doctor who is working on a particular case or controversy can refer to the Wikipedia article to present their viewpoint on the issue. Wikipedia articles are generally regarded as trustworthy and non-profit since the money earned from advertising revenue are used to maintain the website and keep its informational content.

It is essential that all Wikipedia contributors have the ability to edit the same article to ensure Wikipedia’s credibility and quality. This is why Wales created the Wikipedia Foundation, a non-profit corporation. The goal of the Foundation is to oversee and coordinate all aspects of Wikipedia including the management of the website, while retaining copyright ownership over the intellectual property of the Foundation. When they feel their work is being trampled by Wikipedia contributors, they can seek protection or a waiver from third-party arbitration. Wikipedia is in essence an online encyclopedia that is collaborative, which means that one person can write an article, then edit it by thousands of other people across the globe.

Wikipedia is unique in that it was not established to be a free encyclopedia rather, as an information source and education. Wales maintains that the decision to allow editing was jointly taken and not a separate decision by the contributors. Wikipedia is not a business and there aren’t any advertisements on the website.

Wikipedia is managed by a team of editors and volunteers. It is supported by the United States National Academy of Sciences as well as the Academy of Engineering, American Institute of Physics, Oxford University Press, Duke University, Harvard University Press, Institute of Medicine, and Institute of Cognitive Psychological Research, among others. Wikipedia is administered by the Center for Information Technology Services which is a division of the university. Wikipedia is not affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences, and does not have financial sponsors.

Wikipedia was created to provide an open encyclopedia of information on a particular topic. It is not a repetition of information from other sources. However, as time has passed some sources have questioned the usage of Wikipedia as a verifiable source of information. On September 12, 2021, the editors of the Wikipedia article on smoking said that “pages were blocked because of an issue with the technology”. They stated that 6 pages out of 40 were affected by the blockages and they planned to replace them. The editors of Wikipedia decided on April 5 2021 to delete all references to pages that were removed from other websites.

Wikipedia can be a great source of information. For those who aren’t familiar with wikis or do not know what Wikipedia is, it’s an edited, user-edited encyclopedia that offers accurate and reliable information on a subject or set of subjects , such as art business, music medicine, etc. In addition , the encyclopedia is edited by individuals known as “contributors” who contribute information to the Encyclopedia.
